About this Research Topic
Despite many challenges in water pollution management, there are many positive outlooks. Globally, people are beginning to realize the urgency of managing aquatic ecosystems and environmental pollution problems. Several policies and initiatives have been put in place to strengthen water pollution management, prevention and control, and thus drive the process of protecting and restoring aquatic ecosystems. In addition, many organizations and institutions have committed to promote research on river basin management and integrated eco-environmental management to promote the sustainable development of these ecosystems with practical actions. In China, protection and restoration of large rivers, i.e., the Yangtze River, the Yellow River, has been promoted at the national level and remarkable achievements have been noted continuously.
Overall, the issue of aquatic ecosystem security and environmental health relies on cooperation of multiple disciplines, as well as joint efforts of governments, institutions, enterprises and individuals. Only through effective management and protection can we ensure the sustainable use of water resources and the healthy development of aquatic ecosystems. Among which, rivers, lakes and large reservoirs, as important components and key areas of aquatic ecosystems, are critical for exploring changes in the water environment. For this reason, we intend to organize a collection of academic papers and invite global experts and scholars to deeply discuss this important issue.
This collection of academic papers will welcome all kinds of original research papers, including but not limited to reviews, research articles, data reports, etc. We encourage researchers to carry out innovative research work based on field observations, experiments and theoretical studies, combined with frontier advances in this field, to explore deep-seated mechanisms of aquatic ecosystem security and environmental health problems, to propose feasible solutions, to promote integration of academic research and practice, and to provide strong scientific support for the conservation and restoration of aquatic ecosystem.
This Research Topic will cover the following themes:
- Ecological characteristics of aquatic ecosystems, such as rivers, lakes and large reservoirs, and their environmental safety and health issues.
- Structure, pattern, and dynamic of organisms in damaged aquatic ecosystems.
- Biodiversity, ecological and service functions of aquatic ecosystems and their contribution to human economic and social development.
- Sources, characteristics and impacts of pollution in aquatic ecosystems.
- Innovative methods and techniques for aquatic ecosystem monitoring, assessment and management.
- Future directions and strategies of aquatic ecosystem conservation and restoration.
