Background

Asthma is the most common chronic respiratory disease worldwide and its prevalence is
increasing. Acute and chronic asthma complications are often the reason for admission
to healthcare services. It is also one of the leading causes of chronic morbidity and
mortality at the global level and represents a major problem for public health. Asthma
leads to pulmonary and extrapulmonary complications. It is important to assess the
asthma comorbidome as it provides valuable information to the caregiver and improves
the quality of life and outcomes in asthma.

The goal of the current Research Topic is to overview comorbid conditions that are
associated with asthma and to assess the safety of current treatment and medications,
and the interference of asthma drugs with comorbidities. 

Asthma is associated with a variety of pulmonary and extrapulmonary complications.
Extrapulmonary comorbidities affect every system of the body including
cerebrovascular, cardiovascular, endocrine, gastrointestinal, urogenital, etc. Nowadays,
a multilateral approach to asthma is key to the management of this condition. Taking
into account the recent advances in this field of medicine, this hot-topic issue is an
update on the diagnosis, assessment, and management of patients with asthma and
different comorbidities. Drug interactions during the management of asthma and
comorbidities, as well as, the side effects of the treatment should always be at special
attention.
