About this Research Topic
30% of the global population is unable to access essential health services. Universal health coverage (UHC) is a healthcare system in which people can access quality health services without financial hardship. UHC protects people from the financial consequences of paying for health services out of their personal funds and reduces the risk of people being impoverished due to unexpected illness. In addition, it is a system that provides equal opportunity for people to experience the highest level of health.
Before the COVID-19 pandemic, there was worldwide progress toward UHC. However, in-country inequalities continue to be a fundamental challenge for UHC. Examining health inequalities is vital to identify and monitor disadvantaged populations to provide decision-makers with evidence to formulate and promote more equity-oriented policies, programs, and practices toward UHC.
To coincide with World Health Day 2023, Frontiers in Health Services is launching a Research Topic to showcase the latest multidisciplinary research and insights into the global situation and progression toward Universal Health Care. We welcome manuscripts that identify the key challenges and successes in UHC and present innovations in service and funding delivery modes that improve access to health services. Topics may include but are by no means limited to:
• Funding models for universal health coverage
• Implementation of universal health coverage
• Monitoring and evaluating progress toward universal health coverage
• Healthcare staff perceptions of universal health coverage
• Workforce challenges to universal health coverage
Keywords: World Health Day, UN Day, Universal Health Coverage
Important Note: All contributions to this Research Topic must be within the scope of the section and journal to which they are submitted, as defined in their mission statements. Frontiers reserves the right to guide an out-of-scope manuscript to a more suitable section or journal at any stage of peer review.
