About this Research Topic
Saliva is an abundant and easily accessible biofluid that can be collected by non-invasive methods, showing immense promise for monitoring health and disease of the oral cavity and also potentially the rest of the body, in conditions such as periodontitis, caries, cancer and Covid-19. Saliva contains a broad range of molecules that could be used as biomarkers, and many can be discovered by high content ‘omic' approaches. These approaches are essential for the next generation of biomarkers, as it seems likely that combinations of biomarkers will perform better at detecting changes in health than single biomarkers.
The goal of this Research Topic is to explore the biomarkers that are being used to assess health and disease in saliva. Novel approaches in the discovery and detection of saliva biomarkers are welcomed, as well as a wide range of disease types either found or manifested in the mouth. Studies exploring the validation of proposed biomarkers and potential clinical applications of saliva as a diagnostic tool are also of interest.
