About this Research Topic
This collection, 'Speech and Language Processing' welcomes articles on the advancements of science and technology of speech production, recognition, analysis, enhancement, and language understanding. Speech production covers the spectrum of synthesis and manipulation of the speech signal. Speech recognition covers the method of generation of higher-level information from the speech signal, such as transcription, speaker and language recognition, speaker diarization, and so on. Speech analysis, closely related to both production and recognition, deals with the extraction of condensed features from the speech signal and speech signal compression as in speech coding mechanisms. Speech enhancement covers the techniques in speech signal modification to obtain refined characteristics, such as noise reduction, source separation, and so on. Lastly, language understanding covers the broad area of natural language processing that can also be coupled with speech processing techniques, for example, to obtain an end-to-end cyclic approach from speech perception, acquisition, language learning and translation, production and recognition, to automatic dialogue systems. The goal of this Research Topic is to provide a space for new ideas and inventions, as well as comprehensive analysis and evaluations of recent techniques related to the broad spectrum of speech and language processing area.
As per the above background and goal, the scope of this Research Topic covers the range of speech and language processing subjects, which may include, but are not limited to:
• Automatic speech recognition
• Speech synthesis and voice conversion
• Speech coding, analysis, and enhancement
