Background

Non-stationary dynamics are described by time-dependent states. Non-stationary is all around us in day-to-day life – e.g. average temperature oscillations from summer to winter and all types of biophysical processes. Understanding quantum many-body dynamics from the exact microscopic laws is of both fundamental importance to theoretical physics and of potential technological significance, e.g. such an understanding would contribute to the development of quantum technology, e.g. quantum computers. Much work in recent years has been devoted to understanding the emergence of stationarity in quantum many-body physics from first principles, but only very recently have we started to understand non-stationary behavior in such a way.

The goal of this Research Topic is to highlight and motivate further concentrated research on quantum non-stationary behavior and unite seemingly disparate non-stationary dynamics, including weak ergodicity breaking from quantum many-body scars, oscillations in quadratic models, dissipative and isolated time crystals, confinement, quantum synchronization, and others. The relevant models covered will include open, isolated, and driven quantum many-body systems, e.g. spin chains, as well as toy or universal models where relevant. The topic will seek approaches based on a recently introduced framework for studying quantum many-body non-stationarity of dynamical symmetries on the analytical side, but will also solicit complementary approaches and will seek connections to other types of non-ergodic quantum many-body dynamics where relevant. Likewise, numerical and experimental studies of non-stationary quantum many-body dynamics are indispensable and solicited.

Studies relevant to quantum many-body non-stationary dynamics are solicited. Studies in non-equilibrium quantum many-body physics or more broadly, in open quantum systems, are also welcome. The Topic accepts mathematical, theoretical, and experimental research articles.
