About this Research Topic
Neonatal cardiology and cardiac surgery are relatively new science topics in the patients affected by congenital heart disease (CHD). Fetal diagnosis and improvement in neonatal cardiac monitoring and knowledge has rapidly changed the approach to this “new” population of patients. This creates a clinical scenario where different medical and surgical specialties must work together in order to personalize and adapt protocols according to multiform clinical presentation. In this view, a scientific focused series on this population of patients can clarify and make clearer some different strategies applied for the same congenital heart defects.
The aim of this Research Topic is to focus on the management strategies of a “new” generation of patients that most healthcare professionals involved in the medical and surgical treatment of congenital heart disease are facing more frequently. Several perinatal and neonatal considerations must be adapted and adjusted accordingly due to congenital heart defects. The multidisciplinary approach presents, in this case, the gold standard strategy involving most of the medical and surgical specialists around fetal and newborn care. The opportunity to create a common scientific and clinical scenario able to connect different experiences in different congenital heart patients represents a unique opportunity for the scientific community. Continuous advances in the management and approach of such a delicate population of patients must involve all multidisciplinary actors trying to unify the language and pathophysiologic understanding.
This Research Topic on neonatal cardiology and cardiac surgery in congenital heart disease aims to improve communication and methods of approach on neonates affected by congenital heart disease. Specifically, we are interested in manuscripts addressing the interrelationship with congenital heart disease and the following:
Fetal intervention
Prematurity and twins
Low birth weight
The transitional period from fetus to newborn
Hemodynamic consideration in neonates with CHD
Systemic or pulmonary ductal dependency
CHD in the first day of life
Changes in EKG and conduction disturbances
Hybrid procedures in neonates
Conventional and non-conventional cardiac surgery
