About this Research Topic
Sports performance depends on multidimensional factors that act concurrently for improving the athlete. One of the determinant factors for improving athlete's performance is the training methodology implemented by coaches. Among others, training methodology considers the dimensions of the load imposed on the athletes, distribution of training within- and between-weeks, the selection of training methods, and the management of athletes considering the assessment and monitoring of fitness, well-being, load, and readiness, and technical-tactical aspects. Therefore, training methodology is a wide field, in which many factors are key for the ultimate goal: achieving the highest performance possible.
Despite the importance of the interaction of many factors, research is commonly focused on specific elements, not considering the interaction between these or topics of expertise. Therefore, rather than considering the importance of one factor over the remaining, this Frontiers topic wants to open a window for integrative research that consider understanding the best methodological strategies. Interaction between areas is welcomed, namely crossing training methodology with sports psychology, nutrition, or other relevant areas of knowledge.
The current Research Topic aims to receive Original Research, Systematic Review, and meta-analyses articles that may help to provide relevant information to sports sciences and sports coaches regarding the training methodology. Conceptual or opinion pieces are welcome if providing sufficiently novel perspectives on relevant research topics. Interaction between performance factors and training dose are welcomed, as well as relationships between different research areas that led to a wide understanding of sports performance and sports training.
Based on the above-mentioned, we want to provide in-depth knowledge about the following aspects of training methodology:
· Training plan and organization;
· Planning, periodization, and programming;
· Training load;
· Performance analysis;
· Well-being;
· Psychology of exercise;
· Nutrition and sports performance;
· Training interventions;
· Training methods;
· Testing/training individuals and testing/training team as a single entity.
Keywords: Sports training, training methodology, sports performance, athletic performance, training load, training intervention, training load monitoring
