About this Research Topic
Recent advancements in ‘-omics’ approaches, devoted to human health, have led to the development of pharmacometabolomics, which is a new horizon in personalized medicine. Pharmacometabolomics is an emerging branch of metabolomics that combines metabolite profiling and chemometrics to predict efficacy or toxicity of drug intervention on individual subjects to develop optimized treatment strategies. It is an innovative tool for monitoring the effects of drugs on metabolism and for identifying pathways that contribute to drug-response phenotypes. Recently, it has been used to identify predictive, prognostic, and pharmacodynamic response biomarkers to a drug or medical intervention. Ultimately, it holds the promise not only of delivering personalized drug treatment, but also improving the efficiency of drug development.
The goal of this Research Topic is to shed light on the latest progress made in the application of pharmacometabolomics for predicting the efficacy/toxicity of drugs, identifying biomarkers for disease diagnosis/progression, identifying new therapeutic targets, and establishing personalized therapeutic strategies. The main focus is to present an overview of both recent and updated classic studies to further scientific understanding and the practice and application of pharmacometabolomics.
This Research Topic will cover, but is not limited to, research articles that describe:
• metabolomic profiling from non-clinical, pre-clinical, and clinical studies
• technological and methodological developments in the field of pharmacometabolomics
• precision medicine studies that combine pharmacometabolomics with pharmacogenomics analyses
• pharmacometabolomics studies including pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics information
