Antibiotic resistance developed by the microbial population is a major global challenge and is reaching an alarming situation incredibly fast. There is an immediate need to look at this more seriously than ever. Although significant efforts are being made to develop new antibiotics, the issue of resistance to those newly developed is also rapidly increasing. Limited progress is made in the development of alternative strategies to tackle drug-resistant pathogens. The development of such new strategies will not only give us more options to treat drug-resistant pathogens but also preserve the effectiveness of antibiotics to treat microbial infections. To change the current situation, actions are needed to control the spread of drug-resistant bacterial infections and to focus on the development of alternatives to antibiotic therapies. Several emerging strategies are being developed in recent times, like host-directed therapies, therapeutic antibodies, nanoparticle-based approaches, antimicrobial peptides, and bacteriophage therapies.
This research topic edition will cover a wide area of research ranging from host-directed therapies, to direct targeting of infectious agents.
The scope of the research topic will be to publish cutting-edge research and developments in the areas:
• Developing host-directed therapies
• Vaccines/targeted antibodies
• Therapy with phage or phage-derived proteins
• Antimicrobial peptides
• Antisense therapy
• Other non-antibiotic antimicrobial approaches
The special issue welcomes original research articles, reviews, and commentaries from experts in the field of non-antibiotic antimicrobials with a focus on the above-mentioned areas.
