About this Research Topic
Leptomeningeal metastasis is defined as the spread of tumor cells within the leptomeninges and the subarachnoid space, is synonymous with ‘neoplastic meningitis’ and can be further denoted by the primary tumor as leptomeningeal carcinomatosis or gliomatosis. Given difficulties in diagnosis and rapid mortality, median survival is poor and limited to 6–8 weeks without tumor-specific treatment. The diagnostic criteria are a neuroimaging-based and cytopathology-based classification of leptomeningeal metastasis syndromes to derive pragmatic treatment algorithms. However, the diagnosis and management of leptomeningeal metastasis may be challenging. The neuroradiological assessment of leptomeningeal metastasis is challenging. Contrast enhancement can be complex in geometry and small in volume. The results of CSF cytology studies are commonly qualitative, and sensitivity is low, although specificity is high. Performance status at diagnosis of leptomeningeal metastasis is the most important prognostic factor. Therefore, improving the diagnosis, diagnostic accuracy, and management of diseases is urgent.
This topic aims to improve the diagnosis and management of leptomeningeal metastasis. In addition, clinical observational and interventional studies investigating biomarker assessment are encouraged. Manuscripts consisting of bioinformatics and computational analyses of public genetic, transcriptomic, or clinical databases with proper validation for early diagnosis management of leptomeningeal metastasis are welcome. This Research Topic will not consider traditional Chinese medicine-related articles for publication.
We welcome Original Research, Clinical Trials, GWAS/Mendelian Randomization Studies, Reviews, Mini-Review, Perspective, and Opinion articles from human and animal research focusing on, but not limited to, the following themes:
- Novel scientific techniques to Characterize leptomeningeal metastasis
- Biomarkers and predictive factors/systems/algorithms associated with the incidence, severity, and clinical outcomes of leptomeningeal metastasis
- Applications of the latest neuroimaging and other techniques to comprehensively assess and diagnose leptomeningeal metastasis
- Expert comments, consensus, or guidelines for the diagnosis of leptomeningeal metastasis
