Background

In the process of production and long-term service, different forms of defects and microstructure changes are easily produced in solid materials, which leads to the degradation of the mechanical and physical properties of materials. Therefore, the development of advanced nondestructive testing and characterization methods and technologies for solid materials is very important for optimizing the production process and ensuring the service safety of materials.

In recent years, we have seen the rapid development of nondestructive testing and characterization techniques for solid materials and structures. However, the recent nondestructive testing techniques are mainly used and studied for the detection and evaluation of macro defects in the materials. Nondestructive testing and characterization of microdamage and macro performance of materials are still facing great challenges. This Research Topic is therefore dedicated to the recent advances in research and development of nondestructive testing and characterization of damages, properties, and composition of solid materials.

The scope of this Research Topic is focused on the recent advances in research and development in the fields of nondestructive testing (NDT) and characterization of solid materials with ultrasonics, electromagnetics, radiography, and optical and thermal methods. In addition to traditional NDT topics, the emerging technology area of NDT and characterization of microdamage, microstructure, composition, and mechanical and physical properties of the solid materials is more emphasized. High-quality Original Research and Review articles in this field are all welcomed for submission to this Research Topic. Research interests include but are not limited to the following areas:

• New nondestructive testing and characterization methods and technologies for material damages, components, mechanical and physical properties, and related theoretical research, etc.
• New nondestructive testing sensors and their applications both for inspection and process control, etc.
• New nondestructive testing and characterization technologies systems for solid materials, as well as novel and innovative applications of established technologies and systems.
