Cross-species transmission of zoonotic viruses poses a sustained threat to human health. Previous influenza pandemics including the Spanish flu and the H1N1 pandemics, and the current Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) are all zoonotic. Adaptation to the host of human beings and human cells is a prerequisite for zoonotic viruses to cause human pandemics. In recent years, Artificial intelligence (AI) approaches such as Machine Learning and Deep Learning have brought breakthrough results in a wide range of biological fields, including host adaptation. Advances in biological (BIO) approaches including High-Throughput Sequencing (HTS), Deep Mutational Scanning (DMS), and Reverse Genetics (RG) have greatly enriched our knowledge about the viral genotypes and phenotypes which are related to host adaptation such as binding to cellular receptors, replication efficiency in host cells, cellular innate anti-virus immune response and so on. The explosive accumulation of BIO data presents a significant opportunity and challenge for exploring the related genetic characteristics, and efficiently and accurately investigating viral genotypes and phenotypes associated with host adaptation. The genotype-phenotype correlation and specific mechanisms of host adaptation at the cellular and molecular levels also urgently need to be further elucidated using both AI and BIO approaches.
In this Research Topic, we focus on the identification and characterization of genotype and phenotype associated with host adaptation, elucidating the genotype-phenotype correlation and exploring the specific molecular mechanisms, aiming to promote the genetic and molecular understanding of host adaptation of viruses with artificial intelligence (AI) or (and) biological (BIO) approaches. Original Research, Brief Research Report, Methods, Mini Review, and Review that focus on, but are not limited to the following suggested thematic areas are welcome for submission in the Research Topic:
1. Host adaptation-related virus genotypes identification and characterization via AI or (and) BIO approaches
2. Host adaptation-related virus phenotypes identification and characterization via AI or (and) BIO approaches
3. Host adaptation-related viral genotype-phenotype correlation investigation
4. Molecular and cellular mechanisms of viral host adaptation exploration
