About this Research Topic
The interaction between the oral functions and the upper airways is receiving increasing interest from the scientific community. While some conditions like mouth-breathing have a well-described relationship with oral malocclusions, the role of other pathologies impairing the function of the upper airways is more controversial. Yet, it is of great importance to consider the patient in its entirety and to maintain a multidisciplinary approach, understanding the interplay between different systems and functions, particularly when treating children. Indeed, there are some clues that an altered function of the upper airways can modify the morphology of the stomatognathic apparatus, or, on the contrary, that a particular craniofacial morphology may increase the risk to develop airways impairment; moreover, breathing disorders may interfere with growth, also of the stomatognathic system, through systemic effects.
The objective of this Research Topic is to investigate the complex relationship that exists between growth, oral malocclusions, and airways. Etiology, pathogenesis, and treatment effects should be addressed to provide an advance in the knowledge of these complicated and significant problems.
This Research Topic aims to provide an insight into these issues, considering in particular:
• Sleep-related breathing disorders, airways obstruction, mouth-breathing
• The effects of the treatment of airways disorders on malocclusions and oral function
• The effects of the treatment of malocclusions on airway function
• The etiology of breathing disorders and malocclusion, and their pathogenetic interactions
• The effects of breathing disorders on growth, from a local and/or systemic perspective
Systematic reviews, original research, clinical trials, method articles, and case reports are welcome in this Research Topic.
