About this Research Topic
Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are multipotent stem cells found in a wide variety of fetal and adult tissues capable of differentiating into various lineages. Since their discovery, MSCs have been shown to possess remarkable potential for therapeutic applications, which is reflected by a rapid increase in clinical trials utilizing MSCs for the treatment of a broad spectrum of diseases. However, there is much that is still unknown about basic MSC biology and challenges remain in translating experimental findings to clinical treatments.
This Research Topic aims to highlight the latest experimental advances covering all aspects of MSC biology ranging from basic to translational research, highlighting recent advances in the field, whilst emphasizing important directions and new possibilities for future inquiries. Review articles or opinions on methodologies or applications including the advantages and limitations of each, as well as recent advances in the field, are also of interest. We welcome manuscripts of any article type accepted by the journal concerning, but not limited to, the following themes:
· Immunomodulatory properties of MSCs
· MSCs in regenerative medicine and tissue engineering
· MSCs and cancer
· MSCs as a tool for disease modeling
· Lineage commitment and differentiation of MSCs
