About this Research Topic
ncRNAs have been proven essential in development and morphogenesis, and present physiological roles in mammalian cells. However, the dysregulation of ncRNA expression can be a potential driver of pathology and disease development in different organ systems, including the kidney.
Indeed, the role of some ncRNAs, such as microRNAs (miRNAs) and long-non-coding-RNAs (lncRNAs), have been broadly associated with acute and chronic kidney disease, diabetic nephropathy, fibrosis, and renal cancer. However, the functional role of ncRNA regulators in a cell and stage-specific manner during kidney disease development needs further investigation. Such RNA molecules may include siRNA, miRNAs, and lncRNA, as well as less studied RNAs, such as circular intronic RNAs (ciRNAs), circular RNAs (circRNAs), PIWI-interacting RNAs (piRNAs), tRNA-derived stress-induced RNAs (tiRNAs), tRNA-derived fragments (tRFs), and rRNA-derived fragments (rRFs) Identifying ncRNA modulators of kidney pathology may lead to novel biomarkers and therapeutic targets.
Thus, we would like to propose a Research Topic in Frontiers in Molecular Biosciences to highlight recent progress in non-coding RNAs in Kidney Disease. The potential areas to cover in this Research Topic include, but are not limited to, the following:
• What are the functions of ncRNAs in kidney disease progression?
• What is the role of ncRNAs in different cell populations in the kidney?
• How does dysregulation of ncRNAs in the kidney vasculature lead to disease progression?
• What is the role of ncRNAs as prognostic markers of disease?
• How specific are these potential biomarkers for different types of kidney disease or disease stages (e.g., acute vs. chronic)?
• Is ncRNA a realistic therapeutic angle to prevent kidney disease?
• What are the most effective delivery systems influencing ncRNA expression in the kidney?
The Research Topic aims to collect Original Research, Brief Reports, Reviews, Methods, and Mini-Review articles dedicated to demonstrating the role of different types of ncRNA in kidney disease progression or identification of ncRNAs expression signatures from high throughput sequencing profiles that can be used as potential biomarkers. The original research articles should include mechanistic insights using appropriate in vitro and in vivo models or clinical samples. Reviews should be detailed and conceptual discussions on the chosen topic with figures and table data to cover the topic comprehensively.
