The tropical and subtropical regions make a substantial contribution to extensive livestock production in the world. Both intensive and extensive livestock production are being challenged for reducing environmental impact (e.g., greenhouse gases, biodiversity) and increasing efficiency. Selection for sustainable production encompasses the complete biological system commencing with improved fertility, adaptation, followed by growth efficiency and delivering a high-quality end product. Livestock production in the tropical and sub-tropical are being more attentive to selection of adapted breeds but simultaneously, these breeds need to be efficient within the production system to ensure viable and sustainable production.
The primary objective of this topic is to increase interest in research on:
- Sustainable breeding objectives
- Selection for adaptive traits
- Indigenous breeds and sustainable breeding practices
- Cost effective and sustainable recording of hard to measure traits (e.g. fertility; efficiency)
- Selection for fertility to improve sustainability
- Selection for growth efficiency in extensive production systems
