Sexual dysfunctions are very common in the general population. They are more frequent in men and women affected by diabetes mellitus and can be influenced by different parameters, such as lifestyle, diet, and exercise. Several pathophysiological mechanisms, including psychological, nervous, hormonal, and vascular abnormalities, are involved in the development of sexual dysfunctions, but a lot of these mechanisms are not fully understood and clarified, in particular in women with diabetes. In addition, an intriguing subject of sexual medicine regards the clinical use of sexual dysfunction as a potential predictor of future cardiovascular disease or as a marker of occult atherosclerosis. It is of clinical interest to understand and summarize all the aspects regarding the diagnosis and treatment of sexual dysfunctions in men and women with diabetes.
