Synthesis of Complex Structures Using Dynamic Covalent Chemistry

Supramolecular Chemistry has refined our understanding of non-covalent interactions to a level that enables the bottom-up chemical synthesis of complex nano-structures, based on the spontaneous self-assembly of rationally-designed molecular building blocks. At the end of the last millennia, this methodology has been translated back into molecular chemistry, forming the area of Dynamic Covalent Chemistry (DCvC). Important progresses have been recently made in using DCvC as a tool to synthesize organic compounds with complex structures, either under thermodynamic control or in a dissipative manner.

In the end, DCvC extends the synthesis toolkit and enable making complex and unprecedented structures through simple, versatile, and adaptive processes. This “Research Topic” will showcase some of the latest developments in the dynamic covalent synthesis of, for instance, macrocycles, cages, knots and other mechanically-intertwined structures.

We welcome the submission of Original Research, Review, Mini-Review and Perspective articles on themes that include, but are not limited to:

- dynamic covalent chemistry
- reversible covalent reactions
- dynamic covalent macrocycles
- dynamic covalent cages
- topologically-complex structures obtained by DCvC
- out-of-equilibrium DCvC
