About this Research Topic
The incidence of CSDH is anticipated to double over the next ten-years-period, much attributed to the growth of the elderly population. The exact etiology, as well pathophysiology, are conflicting; though, treatment of the CSDH in a majority of cases includes surgical evacuation. Despite being one of the oldest surgical procedures overall, and one of simplest in neurosurgery, surgery for CSDH is also arguably the most debatable. Unfortunately, clear recommendations or guidelines on management of CSDH are unlikely in the foreseeable future.
Several previous novel therapeutic approaches, including conservative and endovascular methods, emerged as a suitable treatment with promising results in a selected groups of patients. Clarification as an entity is of utmost importance, and one of the most important aims of the International COlaborative Research Initiative on Chronic subdural hematoma (iCORIC), while individual groups are focusing on the modifications of surgical and conservative treatment options to reduce the rate of complications, and improve the outcomes.
Furthermore, long term outcomes and excess mortality have also emerged as main issues. Consideration of this information has earned CSDH a sentinel health event status. Thus, broadening the view at these patients, not only to the CSDH, but their general health state and determinants. By implementing both proven and novel approaches, we might finally lay a foundation for the optimised evaluation and management of different patients subgroups.
This Research Topic disperses its scope and encourages all various types of manuscripts from basic and clinical research to review papers on CSDH. The Topic Editors are particularly interested in, though not limited to, the following subtopics:

Clarification of the diagnosis and coding
- Deeper understanding of etiology and pathophisology
- Diagnostic advances
- Surgical treatment modifications
- Modern therapeutic approaches
- Complications
- Outcomes evaluation and prognosis
- Quality of life, long term outcomes and mortality
