About this Research Topic
Foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) is one of the most devastating diseases of livestock. Much of the literature on FMD is focused on the pathogenesis and epidemiology of the disease in cattle. However, the disease also affects other food animal species, most notably, swine. FMD status affects international trade, and swine products are expected to play an important role in supporting the mission of feeding the world responsibly. Subsequently, there is a need to better understand the dynamics of FMD in swine, with the ultimate objective of preventing or mitigating its impact. Here, we welcome the submission of original manuscripts, case-reports or reviews intended to elucidate the pathogenesis and epidemiology of FMD in swine, including, for example, experimental studies, field reports of outbreaks and epidemics, risk assessments, modeling exercises, or discussions on national and international regulations and policy applied to FMD. We expect that the articles published in this Research Topic will enhance our ability to control and prevent FMD outbreaks in swine, ultimately contributing to the resilience and sustainability of the swine industry world-wide.
