About this Research Topic
Sudden Death in Epilepsy (SUDEP) is a major cause of death in people with epilepsy, with an incidence in patients with drug resistant epilepsy of 3 to 9 per 1000. Recently, there has been significant interest in SUDEP. Research is exploding, from elucidation of basic mechanisms, to development of new risk inventories, biomarkers, and potential treatments to reduce the risk of apnea associated with seizures. New wearable technologies are coming on line, which incorporate movement monitors, autonomic, and heart rate detection, which have alarms linked to local smart phones.
