Necrotizing enterocolitis is a major cause of mortality and morbidity in newborns, especially those born preterm. The pathogenesis of NEC has intrigued the neonatal medical and surgical community for over 60 years. Significant strides have been made in recent years in our understanding of why NEC occurs. Efforts continue to be made to improve our ability to prevent NEC or minimize its risk. Earlier recognition and diagnosis of NEC is being explored through various research studies as are optimal surgical strategies for managing NEC.
This Research Topic will focus on recent advances in our understanding of NEC pathogenesis as well as diagnosis and treatment options. We are also eager to explore the use of newer modalities like AI and machine learning and big data in relation to NEC.
We welcome articles addressing the following themes:
• Recent advances in diagnosis including biomarkers and imaging
• Recent advances in treatment options including various surgical strategies
• Use of newer modalities like AI/machine learning and big data to answer some of the important questions in the NEC domain
