Recent advances in imaging technology, together with the development of improved sensors, enable measurements of synaptic activity and connectivity in large functional circuits. Single-synapse imaging in neuronal ensembles should bridge the gap between molecular and systems neuroscience and holds considerable promise for building integrated models of brain function. The purpose of this research topic is to compile the latest developments in synaptic imaging, including new techniques in optical and electron microscopy, biosensors of synapse activity and software platforms for automated image analysis and data interpretation. These include both papers describing methods for imaging synapses as well as primary research papers that provide novel insights into synapse function using various model systems and experimental preparations. Our goal is to provide a comprehensive imaging toolkit for neuroscientists who want to image individual synapses in the context of their favorite neural network.
