Biomaterials that mimic the function of the body’s extracellular matrix which is involved in directing organogenesis and cell function, to allow for functional regeneration of tissue and organs are now being clinically evaluated for regeneration of organs and tissues. The advancements in nanotechnology has led to the de novo design and fabrication of biomaterials from at the molecular level upwards, resulting in rapid growth in the development of a wide range functional materials. In this research topic, we aim to present a snap-shot of the state of the art of nanoengineered biomaterials in regenerative medicine and associated biomedical applications. This research topic combines reviews on the state-of-the art on nanomaterials for biomedical applications, as well as original research contributions from active researchers in the field of biomaterials and nanotechnology. We aim to cover a selection of bio-nano engineered materials that are employed in a range of biological functions that include tissue regeneration, anti-microbial activity, remotely triggered mechanisms, and sensing.
