Mental health and suicidal behaviors among sexual minorities (e.g., lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer) are challenging public health issues across the world. Compared to the general population, significant higher prevalence rates of poor mental health (e.g., depression, anxiety, etc.) and suicidal behaviors (e.g., suicidal ideation, suicidal plan, suicidal attempt) have been reported in numerous studies. Recent review and meta-analysis indicated that the risk of suicidal behaviors is thought to be 3 times higher among sexual minorities than the general population with a prevalence of 28% for suicidal ideation and 14.8% for suicidal attempt. Further, over one third of sexual minorities are living with mental health difficulties, increasing their risk of suicidal behaviors.
Thus, it will be of great significance to investigate and understand the spatial and temporal patterns, the risk factors and underlying mechanisms of mental health problems and suicidal behaviors among sexual minorities Moreover, it is essential to develop effective intervention and prevention programs which target mental health and suicidal behaviors in this subpopulation of interest.
This Research Topic aims to generate evidence regarding (1) prevalence and incidence of mental health problems and suicidal behaviors among sexual minorities, (2) the risk factors and underlying mechanisms of mental health problems and suicidal behaviors among sexual minorities, and (3) the efficiency and effectiveness of public health intervention and prevention programs targeting mental health and suicidal behaviors among sexual minorities. The Research Topic seeks to provide an opportunity to researchers in the areas of sexual minorities to share their research findings.
We would like submissions of Original Articles, Systematic Review, Methods, Meta-analysis, in the following subtopics, but not limited to:
• Spatial and temporal pattern of mental health problems and suicidal behaviors of sexual minorities
• Key risk factors and determinants of mental health problems and suicidal behaviors of sexual minorities
• Mechanisms underlying mental health problems and suicidal behaviors of sexual minorities
• The development and evaluation of intervention and prevention programs targeting mental health problems and suicidal behaviors of sexual minorities
• Advanced methodologies and statistical methods in the research of sexual minorities
• New or innovative sampling techniques for recruiting sexual minorities
