About this Research Topic
We seek contributions that investigate direct or indirect interactions between bacteria and phytoplankton using chemical, physiological, and/or genetic approaches. Topics include but are not limited to nutrient and vitamin acquisition, algal pathogenesis, microbial community structure during algal blooms or in algal aquaculture ponds, cell-cell interactions, chemical exudation, microscale interactions and phycosphere boundary layer modeling, signaling molecules, genome streamlining in symbionts, phosphorus and nitrogen exchange, and microalgal detritus degradation. We welcome studies of true symbiosis where the interaction is obligate and evolutionarily derived, as well as those of indirect interactions such as bacterial incorporation of phytoplankton-produced organic matter and man-made synthetic symbiosis/synthetic mutualism.
