In the past few decades, cognitive neurorehabilitation has evolved in its inclusiveness of scientific principles in the design, application, and measurement of treatment programs. This theory-driven approach is key to the accurate and efficient matching of targeted rehabilitation procedures to recovery profiles. Research addresses the viability of cognitive rehabilitation through the examination of impact factors such as: i) the value of cognitive theory and measurement of brain mechanisms in relation to the development of “best practices”’ ii) the importance of the personal variables of the individual, ii) the effects of environmental variables, iii) the best approaches, singular or in combination, to treat different disorders, iv) the different methodologies (i.e., neuroimaging, behavioural, pharmacological) to be used to test efficacy of treatment. The articles in this Research Topic will objectively and critically examine this broad spectrum of issues in relation to the development and validation of clinical applications. We encourage contributors to submit either review articles or original manuscripts.
