Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) have long afflicted humankind and when looking towards the challenges outlined in 2030 horizon, it is clear there is an urgency to tackle NTDs and better understand the immunopathology of infections. According to World Health Organization NTDs constitute a group of 20 diverse conditions, some of them of zoonotic origin, that are mainly prevalent in tropical and sub-tropical areas, affecting impoverished communities and causing a devastating health, social and economic consequences to more than one billion people. However, in a rapidly evolving world, NTDs have the potential to become a global health problem no longer associated with solely low-income countries, representing a true challenge to One Health approach, and needing urgent integrated solutions from all fields of health sciences. Immunological research is needed for the development of diagnostics, drugs and vaccines for such diseases. With no available vaccines, treatment of NTDs relies on old drugs with potentially severe side effects. Therefore, NTDs urgently require new control strategies, attaining optimal health for people and animals. In more recent years, special attention has been drawn to the interaction parasite-host immune system, as this constitutes a decisive point in infection outcome. This represents a novelty and offers new targets for drug repurposing, new drug development and develop personalized therapies.
We invite authors to submit their innovative works or state-of-the-art revisions to this collection dedicated to Neglected Tropical Diseases. Authors are invited to present their advanced works concerning NTDs on, but not limited to:
• Drug metabolization
• Drug repurposing
• Immunopathology of disease
• Metabolism
• Host-parasite immune interaction potentiated by drugs
• Immunomodulatory profile of drugs
• Ethnobotanical studies and natural compounds description
Altogether, the aim of this Research Topic is to boost research on NTDs, providing a pipeline for accelerating new and impactful discoveries and inspire other researchers for healthy lives on a healthy planet.
