Background

Future transportation systems are evolving towards safer, greener, more connected, autonomous, and intelligent ecosystems in which advanced electric, connected, autonomous and shared (ECAS) vehicles are integrated into new advanced mobility solutions. As the technology gets more mature ECAS technologies are getting implemented into automobiles, trains, ships, drones, mobile robots, and other vehicles. In this context, Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) communication and integrated communication/sensing platform solutions, as an integrated part of connected vehicle solutions, will be a critical factor for the success of future autonomous transportation systems and Internet of Vehicles (IoV) applications. V2X communication enables terrestrial, maritime, aerial vehicles to exchange their speed, location, and heading data wirelessly. It includes exchanging information from a vehicle to any entity that may affect the vehicle mission and vice versa. The communication technologies used allow vehicles to transmit and receive ubiquitous messages, creating a 360° presence overview of vehicles and other participants in the traffic and infrastructure proximity.

Vehicles provisioned with application software (e.g., safety applications), AI-based algorithms and cognitive functions can use the messages from surrounding vehicles, infrastructure, and other traffic participants to determine potential crash threats or unsafe, hazardous situations as they develop. The V2X technology can employ visual, tactile, audible alerts or a combination of these alerts to warn the vehicles and their human or autonomous driver systems. The integration of sensing and communication is a must-have for the protection of vulnerable road users. These alerts from multiple connectivity platforms allow the vehicle decision system to take swift action to avoid collisions and accidents. Intelligent connectivity entitles sensor and awareness data exchange among vehicles, cooperative localization, and map updating and facilitates coordinated maneuvers between autonomous vehicles. IoV integrates and links the ECAS vehicles' domains with the intra-vehicle networks, V2X networks, wireless and cellular XG networks, the processing and cognitive functions provided by federated platforms using the intelligent edge and cloud computing infrastructure. Within the above context, this Research Topic seeks original, unpublished papers addressing key issues and challenges for edge intelligent connectivity technologies for autonomous vehicles applications. Survey and review papers related to the above topics will be considered for publication.

- Technical approaches and implementations for the co-existence of unlicensed U-V2X and licensed cellular C-V2X for ECAS mobility solutions.

- Unlicensed V2X (U-V2X) technologies built on the IEEE 802.11p/bd.

- Cellular V2X (C-V2X) and new radio 5G V2X (NR-V2X) technologies based on and network architecture for ECAS vehicle applications.

- Data and energy-efficient AI-based connectivity solutions for multi-vehicle over-the-air (OTA) updates and upgrades and new concepts for end-to-end security.

- Global hybrid V2X solutions (e.g., wireless, cellular, satellite) to provide flexible technology deployments and upgrades (e.g., timing, model, market).

- Compensation techniques for absolute positioning considering the use of different terrestrial and satellite systems (e.g., GPS, GALILEO, etc.).

- New AI-based techniques to optimise the wireless/cellular connectivity and edge computing processing for ECAS vehicles while introducing solutions to reduce interferences.
