About this Research Topic
Thoracic electrical impedance tomography (EIT) is a non-invasive functional breath-by-breath imaging modality that uses electrodes placed around the thorax and the application of a low current to obtain functional images of the lungs and evaluate lung function. Over the last decade EIT has advanced in veterinary medicine and studies in horses, dogs, pigs, cows and rhinoceroses have shown that EIT can be used in anaesthetized and awake animals. With this technology the distribution of ventilation, the amount of lung collapse and airway flow can be evaluated on a global, regional and pixel scale giving the clinician and researcher the opportunity to not only assess the global lung situation of a patient, but also observe local changes. The effect of treatment can be objectively measured with just placing an electrode belt around the thorax of the patient.
This research topic aims to establish EIT as a respiratory monitoring modality in veterinary medicine.
The topic should not only show that EIT can be used in a variety of species but should also expand our knowledge in respiratory pathology in animals using EIT as a monitoring technology.
Research articles, case reports and scoping reviews on the topic of electrical impedance tomography will be included in this research topic.
