About this Research Topic
The aim of this Research Topic is to highlight how metabolic diseases via cellular mechanisms affect muscle cells, skeletal muscle tissue, or human muscle morphology and function. Metabolic diseases are widely defined as metabolic insults that include not only obesity and diabetes, but also cancer, aging, stroke, COPD, and fasting, etc. Another goal is to identify therapeutic strategies (drug, exercise, nutrition etc) that promote skeletal muscle health and improve overall quality of life.
We welcome articles to this Research Topic from interested scientists, clinicians, and exercise specialists. Article types can include Original research, Reviews, Mini-Reviews, Short communications, and Perspectives articles related to metabolic diseases, but not limited to the following subtopics:
· Tissue morphology
· Fibrosis
· Insulin sensitivity
· Contractile function
· Energy efficiency
· Metabolism
· Mitochondria function
· Association with lipids
· Potential therapeutic strategies to target muscle
· Exercise therapy
Keywords: Skeletal muscle, health, obesity, diabetes, quality, quantity, glucose uptake, metabolism, cross-sectional area, contraction, fasting, aging
Important Note: All contributions to this Research Topic must be within the scope of the section and journal to which they are submitted, as defined in their mission statements. Frontiers reserves the right to guide an out-of-scope manuscript to a more suitable section or journal at any stage of peer review.
