Surgical Approaches for the Treatment of Glioma

Gliomas are one of the most common types of primary nervous system tumors. Despite multidisciplinary approaches and technological advances, the treatment of gliomas remains a challenge. Currently, significant progress has been made in the development of surgical approaches, innovative imaging techniques, molecular characterization, and adjuvant radiation therapy. On the other side, intraoperative neuromonitoring and neuronavigation, metabolic navigation could also help neuro-surgeons during tumor removal. However, the extent of resection has a fundamental role in the management of gliomas because of the diffuse infiltration into the surrounding brain parenchyma. Moreover, demarcation between tumor and normal brain parenchyma is always challenging.

Neurosurgery has experienced significant improvements in the management of most of the diseases in the last few years but despite these efforts, management of glioma is still far from an acceptable prognosis. Therefore, an update of current surgical strategies together with tumour biology as well as multidisciplinary approaches could improve the overall survival for these patients.

In this Research Topic we welcome Original Research and Review Articles focusing on updated surgical strategies and innovative multidisciplinary treatment protocols. We are looking for contributions which primarily focus on surgical strategies to reach a radical resection in a safe and minimally invasive contest and innovative multidisciplinary diagnostic or treatment protocols.

Please note: manuscripts consisting solely of bioinformatics or computational analysis of public genomic or transcriptomic databases which are not accompanied by validation (independent cohort or biological validation in vitro or in vivo) are out of scope for this section and will not be accepted as part of this Research Topic.
