About this Research Topic
Circular bioeconomy (CBE) is considered a tool towards a climate-positive approach that demands innovative technology using renewable sources. As one of the widely applied technologies, anaerobic digestion (AD) is used to produce biogas from agricultural waste for domestic fuel consumption. Under the CBE concept, AD becomes comprehensive as it can be integrated into agri-waste systems. The material resource loop is closed by utilizing waste to biogas and digestate, which can be used further for biofertilizer production. Simultaneous biogas production and digestate reuse are the main pillars of the biogas-based circular economy (biogas-based CBE) model. Its product, biogas, has low economic value, while novel processes for biogas upgrading or generating value-added products are required. On the other hand, biogas-based CBE reuses most of the agricultural residues. Thus, it is essential to assess the potential environmental risk, such as accumulating microplastics or spreading antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs).
The scope of this Research Topic is deliberately broad and aims to bring researchers together working in biogas development and its connection in circular bioeconomy. The Research Topic explores various themes, including novel feedstock for biogas, a new approach to produce value-added bioproducts, an advanced process for nutrients recovery, and a strategy to develop a localized biogas-based CBE model. This Research Topic article collection aims to attract research articles in technology development, process optimization, and supporting the circular economy.
