About this Research Topic
Kidney diseases are emerging as a crucial cause of morbidity and mortality, and are also associated with high public health care costs. Although the clinical management of kidney diseases has made significant progress, their complete control still cannot be achieved and further understanding of the pathogenesis and treatment options of these diseases is crucial and urgent. Increasing evidence suggests a close connection with the immune system, in that kidney diseases are usually associated with immune disorders.
The components of the immune system and not only regulate many acute forms of renal disease but also play a critical role in progression of chronic kidney disease. Loss of immune results in dysregulated immune cell recruitment and worsening damage to the kidney, result in renal fibrosis, leading eventually to kidney dysfunction. Understanding the roles and underlying immunologic mechanisms leading to the development of kidney diseases is essential for discovering novel therapeutic possibilities for this class of diseases.
In this Research Topic, we will collect original research articles, brief communication reports, and review articles under the following main themes:
• Direct immune-mediated kidney diseases
• Effector and regulatory immune cells in immune-mediated kidney diseases
• Immunomodulators involved in the progression of kidney diseases
• Novel cellular and molecular targets for managing kidney disease.
