About this Research Topic
The lessons learned so far and, mostly, in the last year, have to be exploited to improve the field of CH digitization and dissemination, in order to increase public cultural awareness and consolidate the cultural identity of mankind around that valuable heritage.
This Research Topic aims to bridge CH domain and VR/AR technologies, gathering quality publications which address challenges across the whole stages from acquisition, to exploration and dissemination. The whole pipeline covers many different topics ranging from the required capturing technologies enabling high degrees of similarity with the reality (CH digital twins), to the rendering techniques to achieve detailed and realistic visualizations. We encourage submissions as well regarding user interaction to allow exploration at different levels of expertise, methods for dealing with the meta-information, or the design of tools and installations for both the experts and the general public that use virtual and augmented reality technologies.
The goal of this Research Topic is to provide a venue for presenting to the community solutions that address those different challenges, ranging from specific research problems to reviews of the state of the art, as well as case studies.
We welcome submissions of original research and reviews on (but not limited) to the following topics:
-- Digitization for VR in CH
-- Virtual reality system architecture for CH
-- Interactive methods for virtual exploration and fruition of CH
-- Collaborative and distributed VR
-- User-centered experience of CH
-- Visualization and virtual museums
-- Underwater 3D acquisition methods and VR systems for archaeology
-- Immersive methods and systems for enhancing heritage fruition and storytelling
-- VR methods for education on art
-- Multi-modal and interactive environments
-- Technologies for sustainable tourism solutions, remote tourism, and travel applications
-- Ubiquitous and remote access to digital cultural heritage
-- Systems, methods and applications for virtual/digital restoration
-- Serious culture games
-- VR solutions in the COVID-19 era and in its post-crisis period for a meaningful and sustainable access to CH assets
We are interested in the following types of contributions:
* Research papers (A-Type Articles): original and innovative research, hypothesis & theory, methods, technology and code, reviews
* Short papers (B-Type Articles): update of ongoing research activities or projects, brief research report, case report/study
Keywords: Digital Heritage, Immersive Technologies, Virtual Museums, Remote Tourism, Interactive Environments
Important Note: All contributions to this Research Topic must be within the scope of the section and journal to which they are submitted, as defined in their mission statements.
