Over last 2 decades advances in stem cell biology have lead to application of new therapies to regenerate organs with promising results. In the field of Ophthalmology there has been significant progress with regards to ocular surface regeneration using limbal tissues, cultured cells and biomaterials especially for severe chemical injuries with rewarding success. Despite the success of epithelial cell therapy, there are many more challenges faced in diagnosing and treating ocular surface diseases which necessitates the look at all the components of ocular surface ie cornea, conjunctiva, lacrimal gland, meibomian glands and tear film. We herein review the advances and attempts made in the restoring the ocular surface components that could potentially pave way for clinical application
The advances made in ophthalmology in the field of stem cell and tissue engineering not only helps Ophthalmologists and researchers but also helps in disseminating this knowledge to other fields of medicine. This theme would specifically address the recent progress made in addressing ocular surface diseases including cell therapy using limbal cells, conjunctival cells, corneal stromal cells and different kinds of biomaterials. In addition, authors would be invited to contribute to the ongoing research and future potential in the area of tissue engineering, artificial cornea, lacrimal gland regeneration. This theme would be interested in inviting original research articles, review article by experts, critical opinions on challenges etc
