About this Research Topic
Exosomes are small heterogeneous phospholipid-bilayer extracellular vesicles that are served as essential intercellular communicators. Exosomes have greatly drawn the interest of the research communities and healthcare practitioners due to their unique physicochemical properties as well as important biological functions. Emerging evidence has implicated that exosomes have played important regulatory roles in various pathological processes in the brain, aging, demyelination, blood-brain barrier integrity impairment, neuroinflammation, and neurodegeneration. Additionally, exosomes have been widely used as drugs/siRNAs delivery platforms in animals and in clinical trials as well. However, the current research progress of exosomes is far from fully understood. Investigating the physiological and pathological functions of exosomes will help us in understanding the role of exosomes in the regulation of cellular behaviors in the brain as well as filling the knowledge gap of how cell-extrinsic and intrinsic factors interact to control cell fate and phenotype commitment under and pathological conditions.
This Research Topic is dedicated to understanding the crucial roles of exosomes in the pathological processes in neuroinflammation and neurodegeneration, which sheds light on the development of novel therapeutic strategies in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of neurological disorders.
We welcome all submissions in the form of Perspectives, Methods, Brief research reports, Original Research or Reviews including, but not limited to:
- Investigate changes in exosomal release and functions in neuroinflammation and neurodegeneration
- Identify key exosomal contents in regulating the development of neuroinflammation and neurodegeneration
- Investigate exosomes secretion and signal transductions between neurons and glial cells under neurodegenerative and neuroinflammatory conditions.
- Study pathological roles for exosomes in neurodegenerative diseases and neuroinflammatory diseases.
- Use innovative approaches to analyze exosomal heterogeneity at populational- and single-exosome levels.
- Explore the Contribution of exosomes with therapeutic functions to neuroprotection and neuroregeneration.
- Study potential applications of exosomes as biomarkers in the diagnosis of neurological disorders.
