Background

In the last two decades, due to the rapid development of micro and nanotechnologies integrated with electronics, optics, chemical and biological engineering, a new era began to develop micro/nano devices for various biosensing and cellular analysis.

Optical devices such as metamaterials, metallic and semiconducting nanostructures and plasmonic devices have attracted large research interest for biosensing and cellular analysis. They exhibit high sensitivity, and robustness, and can potentially be compacted on a single chip. Metamaterial and plasmonic devices have attracted great interest because of their significant capability to control light at subwavelength scales enabling a wide range of applications beyond conventional techniques. The efficiency of these devices as optical biosensors has proven to be worthwhile in detecting biomolecules and control.

Micro/nanofluidic optical devices have the power to manipulate and detect bio-samples, biomolecules or reagents, at micro/nano scale level, which can well fulfill the requirements for biosensing and cellular analyses. These devices not only perform cellular manipulation, separation, isolation and lysis, but also can provide cellular characterization with minimum sample consumption. In addition, these devices have shown great potential for cellular omics analysis, which might replace conventional/ traditional techniques in the near future.

Multiple advanced functionalities of plasmonic devices and metamaterials, such as hot spot generation, localized field creation, manipulation of single cells and many more, have been demonstrated for the applications of cell therapeutic research and biosensor devices.
