About this Research Topic
Science is often considered a male-dominated field. In fact, according to United Nations data, less than 30% of scientific researchers worldwide are women. According to UNESCO data, only around 30 per cent of all female students select STEM-related fields in higher education.
Women advocating for women is important in every discipline, but especially in those that remain male-dominated. Women and girls represent half of the world’s population and, therefore, also half of its potential. Gender equality, besides being a fundamental human right, is essential to achieve the full potential of the sciences.
The outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic has demonstrated the critical role of women researchers in different stages of the fight against COVID-19. At the same time, the pandemic had a significant negative impact on women scientists, particularly affecting those at the early stages of their career, and thus contributing to widening the existing gender gap in science.
In order to achieve full and equal access to and participation in science for women to further achieve gender equality and empowerment, Frontiers has launched a Research Topic to promote the work of women scientists in Endocrinology. This Research Topic will celebrate the achievements of women in this field and hopefully inspire the next generation of female Endocrinologists.
