About this Research Topic
Zebrafish (Danio rerio) is a small freshwater teleost currently emerging as an in vivo vertebrate model system for biomedical studies. Besides their several physiological similarities with mammals, this species has external and rapid development, optical transparency, high fecundity, a fully sequenced genome, and endophenotypes similar to human diseases. The use of embryos and larvae of zebrafish has the potential to provide massive knowledge about toxicity and pharmacological effects in high throughput drug screening. In addition, the complex behavioral repertoire of adult zebrafish, its sensitivity to drugs, and the ability to respond to them similarly to humans support their utility for pharmacological and toxicological research.
The use of pharmacological and toxicological approaches on different developmental stages of zebrafish is relevant to deepen the knowledge of drugs and toxicants mechanisms. This subject offers updated insights from researchers from around the world on zebrafish as a model of translational pharmacology and toxicology. This topic offers original research articles reporting relevant pharmacological and toxicological data obtained by using zebrafish as a model. Articles reporting the development of new methods or protocols to investigate drugs and toxicants in zebrafish are also offered.
