About this Research Topic
One of the main challenges to lessen the hazards and risks related to climate change is to increase the resilience of vulnerable societies and identify critical adaptation strategies, especially in developing countries. Human well-being is a prominent theme for climate change adaptation research. The impact of climate change refers to the effects on lives, livelihoods, health, ecosystems, economies, societies, cultures, ecological services, and infrastructure. The risk of the impact of climate change is associated with its potential effect. The impact, however, is often uncertain, given the diversity of social, economic, environmental, and infrastructure factors exposed at the time of a certain magnitude of a weather event.
From a regional perspective, Latin American countries present a great complexity of problems related to issues of human and environmental well-being under climate change hazards. Thus, this type of risk must be analysed taking into account the interaction between the following dimensions: 1) climate threat and exposure; 2) sensitivity and adaptive capacity to assess overall vulnerability.
In this Research Topic, we aim to show Original Research, Reviews and Perspective articles addressing the root causes of inequalities under the perspective of climate change. We want to understand different risk management and reduction options, and their implications, with a focus on Latin America. Comparative analysis between Sustainable Development Goals relevant for transformative actions and public policies under the climate change agenda and greenhouse gases risk management and reduction options are also welcomed.
We seek papers on some of the following topics:
- Interaction between climate threat, exposure, sensitivity and adaptive capacity.
- GHG emission risk management and reduction options and socio-economic and environmental implications.
- Mapping of hotspots of potential social vulnerability under climate change scenarios.
- Assessing impacts of climate hazards and risk management and reduction strategies and solutions.
- Climate change resilience analysis and opportunities for reducing inequalities.
- Research on overarching themes of gender, inequalities and climate change.
