The role of autophagy and cellular senescence has been extensively investigated in various cancers either in tumor progression, migration, tumor microenvironment, or therapeutic effects. Autophagy is a self-regulated programmed cell degradation mechanism to recycle dysfunctional components and maintain cellular homeostasis, which is largely based on the observed degradation of mitochondria and other intra-cellular structures within lysosomes. Senescence is a remarkable cellular reprogramming mechanism that involves both epigenetic changes in gene expression and cellular remodeling. Recent studies and reports have confirmed that there is a strong relationship between senescence and autophagy in cancer. However, further investigation and experiments are needed to explore their roles and interplay in different cancers or therapeutic modalities.
