About this Research Topic
This Research Topic aims to address hot topics in optical and opto-electrical modeling and numerical simulations of PV materials and PV devices: solar cells and PV modules. According to the research focus of the journal Frontiers in Photonics, contributions on modeling and simulations of optical as well as opto-electrical properties of devices and materials, including experimental characterization for determination of input parameters and model validation are kindly invited. Careful optical design and optimization of state-of-the-art and novel solar cells and PV modules require advanced modelling approaches to be developed and utilized. The investigations cover the range from material optical and opto-electronic properties over improved and novel solar cell structures to advanced PV module configurations. Current devices consist of many thin and thick layers of materials with different optical and electronic properties, the device structures often include nano, micro or macro photonic structures for efficient in-coupling and trapping of light. Thus, accurate but efficient modeling is a great challenge. The goal of the Research Topic is to form a recognized collection of high-quality research papers, highlighting advances in optical and opto-electrical modeling and simulation results of PV materials and devices of various PV technologies and device concepts.
The scope of the Research Topic are advanced modelling methods, approaches and results of optical and opto-electrical simulations of PV materials and devices. Modelling related experimental methods and characterization results may also be included. Examples of modeling and simulation subtopics are listed below:
- advanced models, methods, and modelling approaches
- nano and micro photonic structures and layers for efficient control of light in PV devices
- optically and electrically active textures
- optics for tandem and multi-junction devices
- semitransparent and bifacial devices
- light concentration, spectrum splitting, up- and down conversion concepts
- color, aesthetics and efficiency of integrated (building, vehicle or agricultural) PV devices
- ab-initio simulations of PV materials
