About this Research Topic
This study focuses on the role of mitochondria in animal disease, the processes may include mitochondrial oxidative stress and energy metabolism, cell autophagy and apoptosis, cell organelle interactions, cell proliferation and metabolism regulation, calcium ion transport, inflammation and immunity, the interaction of mitochondrial and nuclear genomes (mitochondrial DNA, non-coding RNA), metabolomics, gut microbiota, etc. This research also spotlights the impacts of mitochondria on animal nutrition, metabolic diseases, poisoning diseases, etc.
We welcome Mini-Reviews, full-length Reviews, and Original Research papers. Our Research Topic includes, but is not necessarily limited to:
• Mechanisms of cell damage mediated by mitochondrial dysfunction: energy metabolism disorders (mitochondrial membrane destruction, respiratory chain inhibition, reduced enzyme activity, iron metabolism, mitochondrial DNA damage), disruption of calcium-based homeostasis, and production of reactive oxygen species.
• To investigate the role of autophagy and apoptosis in animal diseases based on mitochondrial regulatory pathways
• Multicellular communication: In animal diseases, the regulatory mechanisms between endoplasmic reticulum, lysosome, Golgi apparatus and mitochondria are included.
• Mitochondrial genome and animal disease (parasites identification, mtDNA, miRNA, etc.)
• Mitochondrial Contribution to Animal Performance
• Adaptations to the intracellular conditions experienced by the mitochondria
• Linking mitochondrial function to components of fitness
• Mitochondrial responses to environmental variations
