About this Research Topic
Sepsis is a major cause of acute kidney injury (AKI) among critically ill patients. The pathophysiology of sepsis-associated AKI(S-AKI) distinguishes it from other types of AKI because it shows only modest histological changes despite the functional decline and often requires real-time functional analysis. Currently, the numbers of basic science papers for septic AKI account for only 1% of all publications on AKI. Effective, specific interventions for the prevention and treatment of S-AKI are still lacking. A better understanding of distinctive pathophysiology and kidney-specific regulatory pathways could help to design new biomarkers and targeted therapies and to improve the outcomes of S-AKI.
This Research Topic aims at exploring the possible mechanisms and therapeutic intervention targets of sepsis-associated AKI, and ultimately promote the understanding of the etiology, interventions, and treatment of sepsis-associated AKI.
Within this Research Topic, we invite Reviews, Original Research, and Clinical studies on the epidemiology, outcomes, complications, and therapeutic strategies of septic AKI.
Areas to be covered include, but are not limited to:
- Microcirculation dysfunction and mitochondrial injury in the septic kidney.
- Immune mechanisms for S-AKI
- Novel biomarkers for S-AKI
- Experimental therapies for S-AKI
- Blood purification techniques, the timing of RRT initiation, and CRRT doses for S-AKI
