About this Research Topic
Sexual dimorphism is prevalent in aquatic animals, monosex production is an efficient strategy for their molecular breeding. Thus revealing the sex-determination mechanism of these animals becomes a top priority. As aquatic animals lack sex chromosomes, they evolved a complex and diversified sex-determination system including environmental sex determination (ESD) and genetic sex determination (GSD). There are numerous genes regulating sex determination and gonad differentiation to be identified in the system. With the advancement of high-throughput sequencing, more genomic data for non-model aquatic animals has become available, providing an excellent opportunity to research their sex-determination mechanism. The discovery of the genetic network for sex determination will benefit both fundamental research in genetics and the aquaculture industry's profitability.
Though significant progress has been made in the sex-determining of most animals, studies on sex determination for aquatic animals are still insufficient. This Research Topic focused on revealing the sex-determination mechanism in aquatic animals based on advanced biotechnologies such as high-throughput sequencing and genome-editing. We welcome submissions of original research papers, reviews, and methods, including (but not limited to) research on the following sub-themes:
• Sex-specific markers and sex-related QTL’s identification
• Sex-specific region’s identification in whole-genome sequence
• Function analysis of sex determination genes
• Sex reversal and its relationship with environmental factors
• Relationship between genome duplication and its role on sex determination
