About this Research Topic
Smart cities require more energy to be generated using renewable energy sources in order to keep the environment clean. The fossil fuel-based transport sector is currently transitioning to zero-emission vehicles (electric vehicles / hybrid vehicles / fuel cell Vehicles) with the use of electricity and hydrogen derived from renewable energy sources. Domestic and commercial buildings will require energy derived from biogas/biosynthesis gas, produced from urban wastes collected from houses, airports, railway stations, bus stations, restaurants, shopping malls, hostels, etc. The building energy requirements for cooling, heating, and lighting shall be met using rooftop solar photovoltaic systems and heating through solar heaters (decentralized renewable energy sources). Industrial energy needs shall be supplied by the centralized renewable energy systems (solar photovoltaic, wind, bioenergy, etc.).
Energy is in a transition phase from conventional to clean and renewable energy. Renewable energy use is key to mitigating air pollution in urban cities. Hence, this Research Topic aims to discuss the development of suitable renewable energy technologies as well as innovative ideas for effective implementation in cities. In this context, Frontiers in Sustainable Cities invites you to submit original research on the development of sustainable cities using renewable energy. The topics of interest include but are not limited to:
• Integration of Renewable energy system (rooftop photovoltaic system, solar thermal heating, biogas, etc.) with commercial and domestic buildings for zero indoor pollution
• Implementation of renewable energy-based zero-emission vehicles (electric vehicles, hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, Hydrogen internal combustion engine vehicles, biofuel vehicles) for mitigation of urban air pollution.
• Technology development for conversion of urban waste (municipal solid waste) to energy
• Development of zero discharge industries/buildings with renewable energy
• Energy infrastructure development for hydrogen gas grid, gas dispensing station etc.
• Development of forecast models for estimation of renewable energy requirements for urban cities
• Techno-economic analysis for renewable energy use in urban cities
• Life-cycle assessment of renewable energy systems for sustainable cities
