About this Research Topic
Legacy and emerging per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are anthropogenic chemicals that have been widely applied in industrial and consumer products for decades. However, the release of PFAS during their production, transport, application, and disposal leads to their occurrence in all environment matrices, such as soil, groundwater, and surface water. The frequent detection of PFAS in the environment is of continued concern due to their persistence and hazardous effect on public health and safety. As a result, government regulations and stewardship programs have been launched to minimize the exposure of wildlife and humans to PFAS. To provide essential information for policymaking, research on systematic understanding of PFAS environmental behavior and development of sustainable remediation technologies for PFAS removal is urgently needed.
The goal of this Research Topic is to
(1) better understand the fate and transport of PFAS in different environmental matrices; and
(2) highlight the work on developing innovative solutions to address PFAS pollution.
This Research Topic will focus on the following major themes:
- Contamination profiles of PFAS in wastewater treatment systems and the natural environment including soil and groundwater matrices.
- Fate and transport of PFAS in the environment and wastewater treatment systems.
- PFAS treatment methods and remediation technologies with the potential for practical applications.
- Development and/or improvement of PFAS analytical methods.
We welcome reviews, mini-reviews, perspectives, data reports, methods, and full original research articles focusing on the themes listed above.
