About this Research Topic
For generations, the continual emanation of toxic substances into the environment in response to anthropogenic activities has caused devastating effects to the entire ecosystem. The consequences demand for renewable and sustainable alternatives as a main dependent energy source that have the potential to replace fossil fuels completely. In the past, the issue has been addressed by several researchers and they succeeded in developing bio based fuel sources, i.e. bioethanol, biodiesel, microbial fuel cells etc. However, fluctuation in cost and availability of these renewables gave rise to concerns at ecological, economic and political levels. In light of the above mentioned facts, the development of a cost effective, eco-friendly, energy-efficient and sustainable processes has become a dire need of time. This challenge requires careful integration of various steps involved in the production of bio based energy sources in an economically sound manner i.e. selection of biomass and waste as a substrate for sustainable energy production.
The proposed research topic will give an overview on the potential of easily available agricultural, forestry residues and waste materials for conversion into biofuels serving as a sustainable energy resource. A prime target is reducing the dependence on fossil fuels which represents the biggest economic and environmental challenge in the coming future. This research topic will help in identifying and also in proposing novel approaches to close current gaps for the sustainable generation of renewable energy. It will bring forth the recent advancements in the technologies and strategies for generation of green and maintainable energy systems via valorization of biomass and waste materials.
The editors encourage the submission of original research papers and review article on the following themes:

• Valorization of waste to bio based energy
• Cellulolytic conversion of lignocellulosic to bio alcohols
• Advances in the biogas production systems
• Advancements in pyrolysis process utilizing biomass for the development of bioenergy
• Fourth generation of biofuels
